Another Year, Another iBlog Summit (iBlog4 Delayed Reaction)

Written by Fritz

Topics: Blogging, Events, Photos (using N82)

This post is way late. Late like the time I got to the iBlog4 venue together with Comicology author slash fellow Man-Blog editor Bim and the dashing Liz Lanuzo (darnit, we missed Brian Gorrell!).

Overall, as most have observed and already professed, iBlog has gotten better over time. The topics are current, the speakers competent, and the attendees smart and participative.

We got to hear Karlo Licudine, the “pinoyblogero,” first and, no offense buddy, but I expected to “take away” more from the topic “From Student Blogger to ProBlogger.” There was a sizable number of students in the audience and some of them might have expected to hear tangibly solid material, point on towards the subject like what do students do if they want to start being a problogger, how much time they would have to spend online (having personally experienced how insanely crazy it is to juggle academics with other activities while in school), examples of problogging success stories, and other similarly valuable information. I’m not saying the material was not relevant as it was. I might have set the bar high with my expectations but I was thinking that the topic per se could have generated interest not only towards students but also among other bloggers who my want to earn while enjoying the blogging endeavor.

Next on the day’s agenda, Juned Sonido of baratillo.net tackled on photoblogging and his command on the subject was just as natural as him owning about 10 different cameras which he lugs with him anywhere he goes (cheeky, I tell you). Same went for Jonas Diego’s authority with his craft by discussing about online comics. Bim, being Mr. Comicology (please do visit Bim’s site) grabbed the opportunity by approaching Jonas for a bit of geek-elbow to geek-elbow rubbing (because geeks are way cool like that).

The afternoon sessions started with Coy Caballes and Aileen Apolo talking about video blogging, something that bloggers have picked up on doing moreso during the past year. Coy shared that until more people can have access to higher speed internet, vlogging is yet to experience the height of its greater popularity.

Soon after, Manolo Quezon, Liz Rimban, and Janette Toral (who is, by the way, responsible for spearheading the committee for the entire iBlog4 event. Congratulations, Janette!) tackled on an advocacy that might propel blogging as a source of steadfast and relevant information for the coming 2010 Elections. Questions and concerns were dutifully addressed by a competent panel boasting of expertise on the subject. It started as me being passive about the entire political blogging thing and ended with me seriously considering being part of this noble cause. (Please click on this link for videos and photos from the event.)

Atty. JJ Disini was engaging as he casually talked about the “Legal Challenges in Blogging” where libel, plagiarism, what-would-you-do-if-your-photos-were-nicked-by-a-TV-station-without- giving-you-credit-or-just-compensation, and similar blog-specific items were given light. Noemi Dado then followed with a talk about “Blogging Advocacy” highlighting the good that’s finally coming out of a group effort on filipinaimages.com.

Ria Jose, author of mydavaocity.com, shared a very interesting talk about her and the rest of the Davao City based bloggers’ passion with “Blogging from the Countryside – The Mindanao Blogging Experience.” If I may add, Andrew Dela Serna’s logo designs rock as seen in the Davao Food Trip site and Avatar Media.

Thank you, speakers, and congratulations to the organizers for giving us a Blogging Summit to look forward to every year.

Below are what little photos I got to take of the event. Will come up with the 88db sponsored after-party post with more link lovin’. See you guys again, online!

Better late than never, as they say. And you did a great roundup of the event!

I thought I was the only one getting lost around your “old” site. Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one, hehehe. But this site looks GREAT!!!!

  6. Fritz Says:

I had been meaning to do that myself before but couldn’t. Getting ratified I meant. First time I saw the Avatar Media logo on black background, I nudged Bim and said that logo is brilliant! Thanks Andrew!

And the author totally forgot to tell that he was busy all throughout the event. =P

  16. Fritz Says:

I was busy during the first half of the event. Busy being with myself and being aloof from all the stars present. Because I’m shy, reserved, and quiet like that (may maniwala kaya nito?)

  17. Mikko Says:

Ooops, haven’t posted my iBlog experience yet. May plano pa rin ako para ako ang pinakahuli!
